Hiking near Queenstown, Sth Island
 New Zealand January 2005

First day of the Rees-Dart Track, very muddy the flat part

Too cold to swim!

<>
somewhere here we got stuck in the mud...

..little did she know how hard the 70 km hike would be...

Mt Earnslaw  (Lord of the Rings filming place) had lots of avalanches going down.

...the end (saddle) is nigh...

View from the saddle (very fine, hot weather, still, 1600 meters, snow around)

Vista towards Mt Aspiring

...one of several swing bridges on the way...

many types of mountain flowers at this time of year; beautiful alpine gardens...

Third day: 9 hours walking in the beech forest; it is starting to rain.

...but we try to keep smiling..

...dramatic washouts and river crossings on the way...

...a huge landslide happened here...

magical mossy waterfall

jetboating on the Dart river near Queenstown

view from Queenstown's hill

On a nice day they take out the old Kingston Flyer for a tourist ride..

From Te Anau to Kepler's Track, crossing the Maunapouri

On the smelly steamship TSS Earnslaw we visited the amazing original steam engine room.

Lake what's its name (Queenstown)
