Freeze Chess &
Deep Freeze Chess
I'ts fun, it's fast and it's free!

History
I invented FREEZE CHESS and DEEPFREEZE CHESS in April 2000.
However, since there are about 1500 variations on orthodox chess, the
idea of FREEZE CHESS might not be new.
If it is new, then I claim authorship on this idea.
FREEZE CHESS and DEEP FREEZE CHESS are now available on the Zillions
of Games home page for free.
=> Or go back to my Free Downloads Page.
(Note that in the Zillions versions the kings are allowed to stay in
check!
In Zillions the game DEEP FREEZE is available as a variant of FREEZE
CHESS).
Description
FREEZE CHESS adds just one simple rule to the rules of orthodox chess:
Any piece that is attacked by the piece which moved last, may not move
(it is "frozen").
When castling, only the king paralyses (= freezes) the opponent's piece(s).
Discovered attacks do not freeze.
The king can freeze as wel, hence can checkmate the other king!
The king is allowed to stay in "check", if the attacking piece is frozen.
It adds a lot of fun to call "FREEZE!" when you move a piece so this piece attacks (and hence freezes) one or more of your opponent's pieces.
What makes many people instant fans of FREEZE CHESS?
FREEZE CHESS is very quick to learn - just one more rule.
FREEZE CHESS is less complex than orthodox chess because mostly some
pieces are paralyzed.
FREEZE CHESS games tend to use less moves, because positional game
counts much less.
FREEZE CHESS is ideal for children, because it needs a shorter attention
span.
FREEZE CHESS is wild, weird and wicked, with lots of new and unexpected
twists.
FREEZE CHESS is chess on Viagra!
Strategy
Games of FREEZE CHESS usually take much less moves and much less time.
Threats of mates in one or two moves appear everywhere on the board.
Positional game has very limited use in FREEZE CHESS.
Tactics is almost everything.
It normally pays not to open the pawn structure around the king too
much.
You get the drift. Try it, you will like it!
Variant: DEEP FREEZE CHESS
No attacked piece can move (all attacked pieces are 'frozen').
The object is to checkmate your opponent's king or immobilize all his/her
pieces.
You checkmate the opponent's King by attacking it with a piece which
is not attacked itself.
Furthermore, you win if your opponent cannot move anymore.
Example: if the white queen is next to the black king, neither of them
can move.
The king can stay in "check". Only an attack by an unattacked piece
checkmates him.")
DEEP FREEZE CHESS is again very different from ordinary chess or from
FREEZE CHESS.
Tactics and strategies have to learnt anew, but they are the much fun.
